![]() He ended up playing two - “Dear Prudence” and “Day In The Life.”įor this listener, having the opportunity to see Chris Cornell live in concert was a dream come true. ![]() “One day I’ll play a set which won’t feature a Beatles song,” Cornell declared toward the end of the show. One of the songs he played was “Billie Jean,” a cover of the Michael Jackson song. Such was the relaxed nature of the show, audience members began calling out song titles in the hope that Cornell would play them. “Blow Up The Outside World” from Soundgarden’s 1996 album, “Down On The Upside” - a regular feature at Cornell’s acoustic shows - also failed to disappoint with its anthem-like chorus. The opening chords of “Fell On Black Days” were met with a chorus of “aaahhhhs” from the audience.įor a few moments during these songs, you could have actually heard a pin drop due to the overwhelming attention paid by the otherwise loudly enthusiastic crowd. “Fell On Black Days,” “The Day I Tried To Live” and, of course, “Black Hole Sun” were worth the admission price of the concert by themselves. The biggest cheers of the night were seemingly reserved for Cornell’s renditions of songs from Soundgarden’s hugely popular 1994 album, “Superunknown.” “If I mess this up, San Diego can say it has its very own version of the song,” he told the audience, to great laughter and applause.ĭespite his version sounding pretty spot on to most people, he admitted after performing it that there were a “couple of minor alterations.” Introducing “You Know My Name” - which was the theme song to the James Bond movie “Casino Royale” - Cornell admitted he hadn’t played it “in a while.” So was “Halfway There” from Soundgarden’s latest album, last year’s “King Animal,” their first in more than 16 years. The rarely heard “Sunshower,” a bonus track on his first solo album, 1999’s “Euphoria Morning,” was met with raucous cheers from the audience. “Scar On The Sky,” from his 2007 solo album “Carry On,” was one of the early set songs, along with “Original Fire” from his Audioslave days. Usually with performing artists, it’s better to catch them mid-tour when they’re still fresh, with any problems ironed out.īut Tuesday night Cornell was pretty much flawless - after nearly three decades of performing, his voice sounded as good as ever, and any minor misplaced chords only added to the raw, laid-back nature of the show. Tuesday night’s show was the first night of the 30-date North American tour, which follows a similar stretch of acoustic dates staged in 2011 across the U.S., which earned critical acclaim. With these songs sitting alongside Cornell’s more traditional, riff-laden grunge tracks, his “Songbook Solo Acoustic Tour” really shows off the talents of one of his generation’s most beloved rock figures. “Seasons,” featured in the latest Superman movie “Man Of Steel,” is a true nod to blues greats, while the new song “Misery Chain,” written for the forthcoming Steve McQueen film “12 Years as a Slave,” is a more traditional folk tune. In their new scaled-back form, you realize where Cornell finds his inspiration. These hand-picked songs have been given a new lease of life. Hearing so many hits played on an acoustic guitar, you forget not only how big Cornell and Soundgarden’s back catalog is, but also how loud and abrasive they usually are. He joked, laughed, gave valuable insights into his songwriting process and even took requests.
